"KINGMAN PARK NOT KINGMAN PARKING"

In 2025, the DC Council approved a new NFL stadium in Washington, D.C., abutting the Kingman Park neighborhood. During the deliberation process, we created the "Kingman Park NOT Kingman Parking" campaign to advocate for mass transit and sustainable transportation in the redevelopment plans. Our goals were to reduce and relocate parking, and add a new metro station to service the new stadium.

Specifically, the campaign called on DC decision-makers to:
-
Reduce the total number of parking spaces in the deal from 8,000 spaces, to no more than 2,000 spaces.
-
Relocate all on-site parking to areas South of the Stadium, to places like Lot 8 or the DC Jail, which currently serve as surface parking lots.
-
Invest in a new metro infill station at Benning and Oklahoma Avenue NE. Metro can move around 20,000 people in and out of the site per hour, making it extremely efficient. Unlike parking garages, which may only be filled 10-20 times per year, metro can be used year-round by both residents and visitors, which promotes DC’s broader growth agenda, and makes it a far better investment for DC tax-payers.
-
Activate WMATA as part of RFK Stadium's parking strategy. WMATA has approximately 13,000 parking spaces already built within a 15-minute metro ride of the RFK site. This existing infrastructure should be prioritized over building new parking facilities.

During this month-long campaign, we gathered more than 300 petition signatures from neighbors who support this vision, two-thirds of whom live in Ward 7. Additionally, we had more than 130 people write 5,500 emails to DC decision-makers supporting this platform. Several dozen people testified before the DC Council about the need to reduce parking and boost mass transit.
